Workplace Civility Keynotes & Virtual Workshops

Civility is always a timely topic in the workplace. The City of Glendale  Employee Inclusion Network was pleased to host Dr. Holmes as part of our annual Martin Luther King Jr. event. Dr. Holmes seamlessly linked Dr. King’s legacy to workplace civility. His presentation was thought provoking, interactive and engaging! Participants especially found key components of his training useful both personally and professionally. We look forward to working with Dr. Holmes in the future!

Civility and the High Performance Workplace

As a nation, we seem to grow less “civil” with each passing day. The numerous instances of rude and discourteous behavior, insulting comments, emotional put-downs, nasty tweets, dirty looks and bullying tactics are both disruptive and destructive to building safe, inclusive communities. This highly interactive session will provide us with an opportunity to discuss steps we can take to increase civility in the workplace. Specifically, because of this presentation, you will be able to:
  • Describe what makes a behavior “uncivil” and an organization "civil".
  • Describe 3 categories of uncivil behavior and the negative impact of workplace incivility on individual and organizational performance.
  • Identify specific, behavioral steps we can take to reduce uncivil behavior and increase civility in ways that improve individual and organizational performance.

Audience: Staff members, managers and senior leaders

Format: 60-75-minute interactive keynote presentation OR virtual workshop

Leadership and the Culture of Civility

A culture setter is an influential person who proactively describes, demonstrates and reinforces the behavioral norms and expectations valued within an organization. Instead of letting organizational culture evolve on its own, the culture setter intentionally shapes the environment to ensure it aligns with the key indicators of high performance. This is particularly important when it comes to creating civil workplace environments. Specifically, as a result of this session, you will be able to:
  • Describe the extent to which incivility has increased in the workplace and the negative impact of this uncivil behavior on business performance.
  • Identify and apply 6 leadership behaviors that promote civility in the workplace and have a direct, positive impact on individual and organizational performance.
  • Understand your role as a culture setter and the ways leaders can unintentionally cause incivility.

Audience: Supervisors, managers and senior leaders

Format: 60-75-minute interactive keynote presentation OR virtual workshop

The Business Case for Workplace Civility

Uncivil acts in the workplace have a negative impact on individual, team and organizational performance. Specifically, incivility leads to productivity loss, increased absenteeism, increased turnover, increased cost-per-hire, decreased employee engagement, and decreased health and wellbeing, just to name a few negative outcomes. Clearly, incivility in the workplace is bad for business, and organizations can profit by proactively working to create more civil environments. Specifically, as a result of this session, you will be able to:
  • Describe the specific ways uncivil behavior can harm your organization and negatively impact business performance.
  • Identify the measurable business benefits of reducing incivility and creating more civil workplaces, such as increased productivity and reduced absenteeism.
  • Apply Dr. Holmes 4-step Workplace Civility Model to increase civility in a work team, business unit or an entire organization.

Audience: Supervisors, managers and senior leaders

Format: 60-75-minute interactive keynote presentation OR virtual workshop

Workplace Civility and the Legacy of Dr. King

On April 3, 1968, the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr gave his final speech, “I’ve Been to the Mountaintop”, in Memphis, TN. As he did in many of his speeches, he emphasized our shared human vulnerability and the moral obligation for us to see ourselves in the difficulty and suffering of others. In other words, he emphasized the need for us to demonstrate empathy in our interactions with others, no matter how different those individuals might be. This is the essence of civility and respect. Specifically, because of this session, you will be able to:
  • Describe the primary theme in many of Dr. King’s speeches, which is empathy, respect and civil discourse between diverse human beings.
  • Apply specific actions we can take that reflect Dr. Kings teachings and reduce incivility in the workplace and our communities.
  • Define civil discourse and take specific actions that will improve the quality of potentially contentious conversations.

Audience: Staff members, managers and senior leaders
